I just checked this movie out from my library here in Phoenix, Arizona in the U.S. h=Having looked stuff up about it now and it's awards I was wondering, was this a big hit in Germany? Or was it like an indie film that caught the critics attention? Just curious because this dvd has NO special features to give me any info on this film.

well, let's say it was known, there sure was some media attention, at the box office it did average as far as I can remember.

German movies rarely "hit" in Germany. I'd say it was one of the better known movies that came out there, like
          Run Lola Run
          or
          Goodbye, Lenin

          • but still not quite as much a fair amount of people will know it, and I think for the time it was out it was some sort of a hit.
Though a lot of the more decent films in Germany have an indie feel to them I don't think there is an independent movement today that is comparable to the American one. I think the system is trickier. But don't quote me on that.

It was a well-known movie at the time at came out, also due to Daniel Brhl, who had a peak of his career at that time.
But German movies usually aren't hits in Germany. Hits are still the movies that Hollywood spews out. Also German movies rarely have the prime-time in the theaters as they will have to make place for the big-budget Hollywood greats.
