Then he just becomes automatic at work, that's not the point of the movie. What if you live the rest of your life just doing mediocre at work but never pushing yourself to be better career wise? Wouldn't that bother you? Sure if he skipped all of work and spent all his time with his family that would supposedly make sense but work is 8hours a day 5 days a week for 40+ years, that's a lot to skip.
