Question about self-defence

Would it have been prudent for Jack and/or Ennis to carry a concealed gun for self-defence because:
Given the seriousness of how gay people were treated/viewed in that location/point in time etc and all of Ennis's accounts of what happens to gay people etc.
I felt the walls were closing-in on Jack and Ennis - Ennis being more cautious than Jack - because I noticed when Ennis was with Jack, Ennis seemed to be looking over his shoulder at times and hoping to keep a low-profile.
Finally when we see in Ennis's mind what might've happended to Jack when Ennis was talking to Lureen (gay-bashing scene) if Jack was carrying a gun, is it possible he could've defended himself?
I ask this question given the context of the entire situation…

I dunno if concealed guns were legal at the time the movie took place.
If they were not and even though they may have used them in self defense, that could have gotten them into even bigger trouble being bisexual and being discriminated for that.
