I suspect that today a writer would be separated by Plexiglas and talking to the prisoner by phone - in the unlikely event he could even get the prison authorities to give him extensive access to a prisoner on death row.
Did Capote really get to spend all that time "unchaperoned" with Perry in his cell? -

at one point, when Perry called Capote "Clarice" they did have to put some glass up, but other than that…
