    b) offed himself? I guess it'd be reasonable enough that he'd seen too much, PTSD, couldn't take it any more etc. but did they ever give a specific reason?

      It's not explained in Leckie's book how/why he became a US Marine after being a commando and having fought at the raid in Dieppe.
      The suicide part isn't accurate at all (although there were suicides during the New Britian campaign). The actual 'Commando' died during the battle of Peleliu according to Leckie's book.
