Why were they ordered to destroy letters with dates and addresses?

If you were captured, then the Japanese radio network, NHK, could broadcast the fact that you were captured and name your family members, and give your specific hometown address.
NHK frequently did this anyway, but the American policy was to cut down giving the enemy propaganda value regarding specific individuals.
