Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Open Water

Ok, it's not a pop'corny' movie like Jaws but it seemed pretty realistic which made me feel tense all the time. I know that sharks don't usually attack that easily but at the end there were too many of them so that it was almost unrealistic if they hadn't taken a bite.
I felt like I was drifting there with them and the feeling of having a shark attack any minute was there all the time which was pretty intense. I liked the low key realism to it which is whaht made it specifically creepy to me.
It's like watching one of those super realistic car crash commercials.

I didn't feel any of that. I just wanted the sharks to have their supper and the credits to roll. It was boring as hell and the acting was terrible. I didn't care for the couple at all by the time they got to the water and was left behind. I don't swim, so I would never go scuba diving. The only time I like to be on the water is when I'm on a cruise ship.

Sorry that you couldn't empathize with the couple, but that may be only your issue with the movie (you don't swim). I did. But, it doesn't make it a bad movie. The acting may not have been top notch, but wasn't terrible at all.

I really liked it too. The poor acting would've just helped it seem more real. I didn't think the acting was poor at all though. Since there were only the two of them really in this movie, and they acted like a real married couple would, bickering over stupid nonsense and generally acting terrified.
For years now I have vowed never to swim in The Sea and this movie just made me all the more certain that I will never go in The Sea again!
Luckily though I have been scuba diving a good few years before seeing Open Water. We were only down to a depth of 6 metres though. It was a surface dive, where we waded out from the beach, then submerged.. then when it was over, we surfaced and swam/waded back to land. So the possibility of an Open Water incident was never going to happen to me. 🙂
I say luckily because there's no chance of me ever going in the water again. I blame things such as Shark documentaries on TV, Open Water, Jaws, and the like.
I will never enter The Sea willingly again. BUT I loved this movie! It is perfect. If you like this, make sure you see the episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive" with the people in the life raft. It's very short but very good if you like/hate sharks!

You're probably well-advised to avoid land, too. Of all the movies I've seen, the ratio of "horrible things happening to people on land" vs "horrible things happening to people at sea" is roughly 50-1. Space is apparently pretty dangerous too, and underground caves seem to be crawling with carnivorous monsters. Your best bet may be to hover in the lower atmosphere. Planes and helicopters can crash, so you'll need to figure out a way to do this without mechanical assistance.

I have meddled with the primal forces of nature and I will atone.
