when they surfaced and the boat was not there, why didn't the swim over to the other boats, obviously they left them behind, why risk that the boat would not come back
that mistake cost them their lives
    just don't get it!

You may have noticed all the pats they saw were quite a distance. Daniel realized a current was moving them in the other direction. Do you remember when he looked again for the coral formation he used as a marker for where the boat would be it wasn't there anymore? That's because a current moved in and was carrying them away. If they tried swimming toward any of those boats, they would be swimming against the current and they wouldn't make progress. All they would do is exhaust themselves. The boats they saw were all miles away, and they wouldn't sit around waiting for them because they had no idea their were two stranded divers out there. If the boats are moving, swimmers will never catch up with them. Daniel thought they would be better off waiting for their own boat to come back, and he would've been right had the crew noticed their belongings left behind on the boat. No one saw them, though, until the next day. It was too late by then.

I thought that too but realized the boats looked closer than they really were and swimming against the currents AND creating movements Under the water attracting sharks probably wouldn't have worked.
