He should have been, but I've come to learn that there are always going to be snubs at awards shows. I wouldn't be surprised if the content of the film turned off a lot of the Academy voters, actually, as they tend to be quite stuffy.

Brilliant performances in this film. It was greatly overlooked 😞

I don't know if it was a deliberate snub, it could be the case that he just wasn't put forward and didn't campaign for it.
That said I do think it was Oscar worthy, his performance was so haunting and he inhabited the role so completely it was unnerving.

Very simple. To put it plainly, the Academy powers are composed of cowardly wusses. Gordon-Levitt actually deserved the award.

Even if that were a legitimate reason (it's not),
                      Brokeback Mountain
was released in 2005 and didn't make an appearance at the Oscars until 2006.
                      Mysterious Skin
was released in 2004, therefore would have been in the running for the '05 awards.

you would think that, but the cinemas received it in 2005

Truly deserved to be nominated at the very least.

I think it's because Mysterious Skin is considered to be an 'india film', and the Academy never nominates indie films or people who have starred in them or worked on them. They always seem to want to exclude independent cinema for some reason.

Crash and Platoon both won best picture and were independent films. It was because of two reasons: 1. Not many Oscar voters saw it and 2. It's subject matter.

Not true. They clearly snob them often but not all the time. Hilary Swank, Holly Hunter and Melissa Leo come to mind.

They overlook this fantastic performance, but the Academy just can't ignore a film like Beasts of the Southern Wild (for example)
                                    . Definitly deserved a nom.

I just said the same thing under another thread, why wasn't he nominated? It's amazing how the Oscars tend to overlook brilliant acting by underrated actors.
