Little girl with no father, and a self-hating mother with a knack for hooking up with abusive losers, is abandoned at her grandfather's house by her mom, who goes to look for a job. They just got there the day before, and grandpa was none too pleased to see them. The next morning, girl just makes herself a sandwich in grandpa's kitchen.
WTF? He didn't give her permission to do that. Besides, he hadnt really taken to her at that point. She previously hinted that she wanted something for breakfast, and he nastily told her to go buy her own ("Are you hungry? Is there a McDonalds in town" Redford: "Got five dollars? No? Then too bad". And then he bicycles himself into town for breakfast! What a jerk). So, she waits until he leaves, and starts raiding his fridge for sandwich makings, making a mess in the kitchen.
Look, I applaud what the girl did. Redford was being a major dirtbag at that point. It's just that its not really credible.
I mean, why did she think he wouldnt mind? Based on how he been acting towards her up to that point, you'd think she would have been terrified to do anything, let alone just make herself a sandwich like she owned the place.
Nevertheless, I like the implied message she sent to Redford: Screw you then, grandpa, I'll just make my own damn food

I think it was to show how split this little girl is - on one hand she's a little girl, very polite and subservient. But, on the other hand, she has also had to take care of herself and seen more than a kid should see. So, while she's respectful, she also probably knows well that if she wants breakfast, she's going to have to find it. She's resourceful.

Actually, if you watch the film closely, she made the sandwich BEFORE Redford left. He already had the makings out on the counter. When he went out to see the Morgan Freemand character was when she made the sandwich, which is why he asked her to make one later and take it out to Freeman. The mess in the kitchen had already been made by Redford. At 11 years old, I think her mind was more on her stomach than 'permission'. After what she and her mother went through getting there, she probably hadn't had much to eat the day before.
