In S3E4, Bullock asks Alma to give Steve a bank loan to buy the livery from Hostetler. Says Steve's surname is "Fields". Isn't that the last name of The Ni???? General, aka Samuel Fields?

Seems weird they have the same last name.

It was common at the time for slave families to adopt the name of their owner. We'll never know if there was any connection there or not. Not that either of them would necessarily have known it if there was.

          That is an
          extremely
astute observation. I'm amazed more folks didn't pick up on it, but it's clearly something they dropped in there intentionally. Possibly as a statement, and/or perhaps only to see if peeps were paying close attention. lol.
But what do I know. I'm just a girl.

My first thought was that it was a mistake that wasn't caught.

That seems unlikely. It's especially telling that Steve never really had a last name (when almost everyone else does) except as mentioned that once very briefly. I feel fairly sure they slipped it in there intentionally as some sort of statement.

Never considered it could be an intentional nod to Steve's hypocrisy?

I'm curious to know Milch's intent.

Steve had more in common with the objects of his ire than he would ever be willing to admit or comprehend.
