Just finished watching all 3 seasons and its an amazing show that deserved atleast 6-7 seasons like any other long running and good show.
Some of the writing is a bit inconsistent and there was some unanswered stuff especially between season 1 and 2 but overall it was a fantastic fun show to chill with, a show i felt i could rewatch a couple of years later i finished it even when i was still midway through the show on my first watch.
This show has amazing lines and dialogue all over it and i only felt Bullocks character was a bit absent but i would definitely not have him switched out with a gunslinger of a sheriff that seeked too much attention in some way.
Janes and Utters characters were the only ones i felt was pretty weak and Trixie got way too much airtime in season 2 and 3 aswell along with jane, especially the Joanie and Jane story arc felt pretty off Joanie was extremely boring in season 3 aswell. It did have aa couple of weak actors mixed with some extremely good ones overall. Utter had some funny lines but was overall bizarre and reminded me too much of the character he literally played on Sons of Anarchy aswell. Thankfully this show never bordered to the point where it switched between making their cast likeable/unlikeable like that show did though throughout its course. janes scenes got really old and unneccesary aswell and got increased even mroe in season 3 or so, i felt like at that point she became probably some kind of local drunk mascot for the writers or something like some kind of pet that they didnt feel like they could just write off. Tolliver was amazing aswell but makign hgim sick like they did with Al Swearengen i feel like we missed out on tons of great dialogue in those episodes when both had their stretch of episodes where they were sick.
I really hope it comes back in some form this show is a gold mine that deserves more this show was Al Swearengen, Tolliver & Doc Cochran, 3 of the best characters ever made in a show.
Steve and Richardson was some of the best and funniest characters aswell. Sad to see Richardsons actor has passed he was one of the best things about season 3.

I agree it's a shame it was cancelled after such a short run (which is what happened - actually I believe even after cancellation was scheduled, the creators of the show were offered a chance to wrap it up in a shortened 4th season but declined to do so). In fact I just purchased the complete series on DVD which includes a boatload of extra material on separate discs and I am hoping to learn more about it, including why it's run was halted so early. Although my guess would be simple low ratings. While the show was probably one of the most excellent of it's kind ever, it might not have had the broad appeal of some others - since the dialogue was so 'grown up' and one had to actually pay close attention at times. For that matter I can't imagine it would have appealed to kids (or people with the intellect of such) for the same reasons. Hence it was simply over many people's heads.
I will say this, though. The ending of season three could be interpreted as (a rather somber) ending to the whole series. I believe if one didn't know any better that's what one might take it for. However we kinda know that that wasn't (originally) planned to be the end of the series.
But what do I know. I'm just a girl.

Your guess is wrong. It was ended because of money. The Wire had far lower ratings and went for 5 years. Chris Albrecht (CEO) just didn't like the show. And he was drunk most of the time anyway.

How anybody in the entertainment business NOT recognize what she special show this was. Maybe understandable if they couldn't back it at its conception stage, but 3 incredibly successful seasons later?
As already mentioned, ratings weren't the issue. Creator should have done the wrap up season. Despite the hype around a show, many ppl don't want to commit if they know it was never properly
          concluded.
