I didn't really understand what Timothy had in general to do with the story. I'm sure I missed something, because I was really tired when I saw this. I didn't undertsand what was with the sex scene, or the whipping scene either? I'm confused, so can someone explain?

The "twist" was that the slave codes were made by the old slave (Wilhelm). Timothy acted like a proudy negro, but he really was a pleasing negro who acted that way to take advantage of Grace, steal the money, etc.
As for the rest, to simplify it, it's about the failure (even hypocrisy) of idealism in the harsh reality.
