It is a great metaphor for growing up in upper/middle class America. You start off protected by an all-powerful family. Then you use that power to go out into the world and do some good. And you slowly wean yourself off your family. Then you find some friends and achieve something greater than your stupid parents could ever dream of. Then it turns out your friends aren't really your friends, your family is gone, and you're all alone in a cruel world.
