Nowhere in this film does it say that Takei killed Toshio (unlike the US remake). When his teacher visits him, he seems "alive." Had Kayako not yet killed him?

I'm almost positive he wasn't dead yet when Kobayashi came to visit him. Instead, I got the impression that he died later, perhaps from starvation or something.

He was. Notice how he started meowing while Kobayashi was turned away. He was already dead, his spirit merged with that of his cat.

I think that the spirit of the cat (which was killed by Takeo) somehow merged with the still living Toshio. Or something.
