Eventually, they made a comic book sequel. Freddy vs Jason vs Ash and its sequel Freddy vs Jason vs Ash: The Nightmare Warriors.
When FvJ originally came out, I had hoped it would follow a similar pattern to the old Universal horror films. FvJ was Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. The next movie would have them encounter Pinhead, or Leatherface, or some other slasher villain similar to House of Frankenstein/Dracula. Then finally, we'd have Jay and Silent Bob Meet the Slashers, just like Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein concluded Universal's horror run. Since Crystal Lake is officially in New Jersey, it would kind of make sense for Jay and Silent Bob to get involved. Too many different studios would've had to involved for any of this to happen, though.

I love A&CMF, but I get where you're coming from.

I'd probably pay full ticket price to see that.
Why leave Jason out? Most of time, he's more Frankenstein Monster than Michael. And while Freddy wouldn't be able control them, he's proven that he's capable of influencing them.
Not sure Leatherface is the best choice to fill the Talbot role, but there's not much to choose from. Most slashers have never done anything remotely decent and are evil 24-7. Norman Bates would probably be a slightly better choice, since, like Talbot, he is two "separate" people. Plus, he's one of the earliest (if not the first) Slasher Villain.

A sequel actually was considered a bunch of times. They kept getting closer and closer but something would always get in the way and stop it from progressing. Robert Englund kept saying he would go for 1 more and he even said they were getting closer. But as the snags kept getting in the way, Robert was getting older and older every year. Eventually, he said his body wouldn't allow him to do it anymore, that they had waited too long to get it going. The sequel project was eventually scrapped altogether and that's history.
