Can someone tell me when 'Claustrophobia' is going to come out in the UK? I have been checking the DVD retail outlets to try and find out if a release date on R2 DVD is imminent, but with no success. I am tearing my hair out, metaphorically, trying to get some good news regarding this matter. This is the only chance for Melanie Lynskey to be recognised as a star in the UK.

Cassavafilms.com is about the only place you'll find distribution information so until something pops up there I'm afraid you're out of luck. Also, I wouldn't be so drastic as to say that this film is Lynskey's only chance to be recognised as 'a star' in the UK - if anything, it would do her (already non-existant) profile in Britain no favours at all. Much as I enjoyed the film, it is, at the end of the day, a straight-to-video release, so if and when it gets released on DVD there is hardly going to be very much coverage on it, is there?

There is definitely some kind of pattern emerging, Nate. Have you noticed that whenever she does get the lead part in a film, that film conveniently slips back into obscurity. The pattern is more pronounced in the United Kingdom than it is in the United States. Should her house ever make an appearance on the TV quiz show 'Through The Keyhole', as soon as the home and studio audience, as described by the host Sir David Frost, get a glimpse of who she is, the round of applause will be very minimal. I blame Empire Magazine. If they had only profiled Mel alongside Kate Winslet, she could well have become as much a household name as her co-lead became.

that's because melanie lynskey hasn't had the lead part since heavenly creatures, and hasn't been good since then either. she's only one of the leads in serial slayer, and she's the weakest of the three. meanwhile, her agent sticks her with small roles in bad movies and now a bad tv show. if you want to blame anybody for her not becoming a star, blame her agent and blame lynskey herself for not taking acting lessons. -

Well I don't agree with your (harsh) comments, but you are entitled to them. In my opinion Lynskey has turned out consistently good performances since Heavenly Creatures, supporting or otherwise (- by the way she had lead roles in Snakeskin and Foreign Correspondents). To be coy, it's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it, and Lynskey has made a lasting impression on me with each of her film and TV roles. And do you really think she'd still be working, or as frequently, if her acting skills weren't up to scratch?

I am starting to wonder whether this film will ever get a Region 2 DVD release. Mark Kines, the director, sent me an E-mail that only dealt with release dates for the US, as well as New Zealand and Australia. He hardly mentioned anything about negotiations for a UK release date. When I asked him to E-mail me when he had definite news about a Region 2 release for this DVD, he told me that he was taking me off the mailing list, so I had to apologise, because I need to be on it for when he does achieve a deal for distribution for 'Serial Slayer'. However, I get the feeling that he never had any plans to negotiate for it to be brought out on DVD over here. It's depressing!

My friend, it's not as easy as all that. He can't simply phone somebody up and tell them to release his film in the UK. It's a complicated process, one that he probably has very little to do with. It's up to the distributors themselves whether or not they negotiate a release in the UK. If you want to see the film for the sake of seeing the film, for God's sake get yourself a multi-regional player and order the DVD off amazon. If you're just complaining because you want Melanie Lynskey to get exposure in the UK, forget it. This movie isn't going to do that; release or no release.

You are right. Part of my complaint is motivated by the fact that Melanie Lynskey is unknown in this country. This is something that I find appalling. I'm determined to see that this is put right. Melanie Lynskey does have moderate media exposure in America. She should be regarded as a celebrity over here as well.

AT LAST!!!!!!!!!
I am pleased to announce that 'Claustrophobia' will be released on February 20th 2006. After two-and-a-half years of waiting, us British Lynskey fans will be able to see it on DVD. This will be the first time that a movie with Mel as the lead has ever been released in the United Kingdom, although this depends on whether her name will appear at the top of the cover illustration, along with Mary Lynn Rajskub.
