What did everyone assume the name The Ring was in reference to? After watching the film I always assumed it was to do with Samara looking up from the well and seeing the ring of daylight around the top where it was not totally sealed from light. A friend if mine recently said she thought it was because the phone "rings" after watching the tape (incredibly this never crossed my mind). And I've just read the writer (or possibly director) say it's because a ring signifies the continuous loop in the story where you watch it/die/make a copy etc.

While I think at the outset, it refers to Samara seeing the 'circle of light' from the well I think it just may be both Samara's look and the continuing circle of her spreading of evil & damnation.
The title is a double-entendre, in my opinion.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?

In my opinion the title has multiple meanings and not just one. Two of them are the literal ones: the ring of light Samara sees from the bottom of the well and the phone ringing after the viewer finishes watching the tape. The other meaning is more symbolic: a ring is a circle, it has no ending; and the hwole videotape thing is a circle. The viewer of Sadako/Samara's cursed tape has to make a copy and show it to someone else if they want to survive the curse, and the next viewer has to do the same, and so and so. It's a ring, a circle.
