Okay, first of all about what is commonly said; Yuichi is philia and Hoshino is blue_cat. However it has been suggested in a different topic that the lines are left blurred as to who is who so that the internet personas just represent the kids in general.
HOWEVER when I first saw the film the first person I thought blue_cat was was the girl that jumped to her death (Tsuda?). This is because there is a conversation right before her suicide where the music peaks, blue_cat finds a release via philia on the boards and blue_cat mentions flying.
Now when Hoshino was shown to be blue_cat I changed my mind but thinking back I can't help but wonder if maybe the lines are more blurred than we thought?

Yes, I thought that too. Amazing isn't it?
It's not that I'm not curious about who is who, but I think this blur makes the film so much greater. 🙂

There is no blur. The two guys are the two Internet chat mates. That's what makes the movie so heartbreaking, that the two former friends, who now have a cruel, torturous relationship, are unwittingly confiding in one another online, and when Hoshino realizes this (the whole business with the apple), it only makes him abuse Yuichi again at the concert by throwing away the tickets before Yuichi can get in, which in turn causes Yuichi to finally snap and do what he does once the crowds let out. I love the way the director played these scenes, too. You see no sudden reaction from Hoshino as you would in a Hollywood movie, nor is there a happy Hollywood ending where they suddenly realize they still care for each other (if in a weird way) and make amends. It wouldn't be realistic. In real-life, teenagers can be so self-involved that even a situation like this only steels their resolve to remain self-involved and cruel.
