I don't think this ripped off Event Horizon, but it did remind me of EH. Event Horizon was quite scary when I saw it in the theaters at the time.

ive never seen EH - i thought this was "The Shining on a boat" .
i also thought this was pretty good.
Steven Wright: Right now, I'm having amnesia and deja vu - I think I forgot this before.

I was just going through the threads to see if this has already been mentioned and here you are! It really is almost scene for scene at times!

Both movie had similar elements but I would not say it was a rip off.
              It's that man again!!

See, I think this is more Alien (1979) infused with supernatural elements. So, The Shining or Event Horizon could be contenders for the supernatural side of things, but I still think structurally it can be called Alien on a boat. My reasonings for saying such:

                  • The cast of characters are known by last name only and are tied together professional, in an occupation where gender doesn't matter.
                  • The setting is as isolated and helpless as can be, at least as possible on Earth being in the middle of the cold sea. If not in space, then in the sea would probably be the next best alternative for a horror setting.
                  • An ominous presence picking off the cast one-by-one, and much of the bickering and bitching is similar between the two movies.
                  • One character from each crew turns out to be a total snake in the grass.
                  • The final survivor is a
female tomboyish character, neither of whom got top billing over the actor playing the captain character who dies despite getting top billing (though Gabriel Byrne got the "and" credit in the opening titles, he shows up as top billing here on IMDb).
