So were they supposed to be the same age because I thought they made a cute couple, but since they looked exactly the same age it didn't seem weird to me that'd she'd be dating him even though he was her coach?

I don't think so. I assumed that Jess was supposed to be around 17-18, while Joe was in his mid 20's.

Well Jess would have to be 18 I assume since she just finished high school in the film. I can't believe Keira Knightley was 16 in this.

I couldn't believe it either! While Parminder was around 26. Keira looked so much older than her age when she was younger.

I don't think that's weird, actually. Cause Joe didn't look that old to be Jess's boyfriend.
And I figured that Jess's age was around 17-18 and Joe's was early 20's.
I don't think that's a big problem.

I think Jess is supposed to be 17 or 18 and Joe is supposed to be early to mid 20's, like 22 or 23.

I assumed 18 for her (finished school, they go to a bar) and early 20s for him, which is why I didn't feel it was too weird.
I actually didn't realise that the male actor was in his late 20s at the time, though - then again, so was the actress. Both looked younger.

They looked close in age because they are in real life there 2 years apart with her being the older of the two (she was like 27 at the time of filming/release and he was 25).
