Anyone else connect this and Resident Evil?

After playing "Resident Evil", a year or so after playing "Luigi's Mansion", I thought this game was more than a subtle tip of the hat to the other one. The entire game is set in a mysterious mansion, which appears like a more cartoony version of the RE/Biohazard mansion, with a similar layout (in the foyer, at least.) Everytime Luigi opens a door, there's a cinematic with a close-up on the door opening, just like in RE. The strange, third-person camera angle and controls are slightly similar (There obviously a lot less constricting and a lot more kid friendly in LUIGI). Both games revolve around solving puzzles and finding keys to open doors, defeating supernatural horrors. The genre of "Luigi's Mansion" could even be described as a survival horror for kiddies.
I did an AIM search for "Resident Evil" and "Luigi's Mansion" together, expecting that every sight that mentioned LUIGI would mention RE's influence on it, and I didn't find anything.
Am I off base here?
