      How do people become spies?
      By fate.

It seems the will to help a government.
Take for example a top engineer who worked for Boeing, he gave classified intel on.space shuttles and its (NASA) specs. He gave that intel to the chinese for their space program.
He didnt have any military rankhe wasnt even a chinese citizen. He was taiwanese and +25 year in America. (a legal american resident)

And most of all how do they recruit people to kill for them. Do they recruit ex-criminals who have done it before, do they brain wash or do people simply volunteer not knowing they will have to kill?
You're probably referring to the CIA's Special Activities Division's Special Ops group. They are all ex-special forces, chosen because they already have many of the skills needed and have proven themsleves in their work. Plus as they've killed before it'll be easier and they don't have to "get used to it". Recruiting from Special Forces is common with all Intelligence agencies across the world, for example Mossad recruit from Sayeret Matkal, MI6 from the SAS, etc.
Although fictional spies are glamourised there is some element of truth in them being chosen because of their background. In the Bourne films the main character was ex-Delta Force. James Bond was ex-Naval Intelligence.

if you check out the DVD for this movie (Spy game) there is section devoted to outlining recruitment by the CIA in the bonus materials section.

In the mid-90s I took a conversational German langauge course at the local JC. Our teacher was from East Germany and had somehow moved to the US in the 50s and joined the Army. When they learned that he spoke Russian, they recruited him to be a spy. He was stationed in Berlin and told us that the USSR/E German spies and the USA/W German spies knew who each other were and it was a game of trying to outfox each other by pretending to be traitors/double agents, etc and passing along alot of misinformation.
One good story he told us was that the USSR would send women with STDs into W Berlin to hit up on US officers and hopefully pass the clap onto them. The theory was that this would cause a disruption among US command with the officers due to family termoil when the wives' would find out about their husband's STD.
Love's turned to lust and blood's turned to dust in my heart.

The CIA recruits Americans to be cia OFFICERS whom are technically spy handlers, not spies in the sense we are referring. The real spies 'we' use are the agents that operations officers, the case officers, recruit.
Technical intelligence gathering is done by us personell under official or non official cover, but the human intelligence is done by recruiting foreign assets.
For example. US citizen becomes cia ops officer, then gets posted overseas as a embassy attache. While overseas, that ops officer then recruits say, an embassy employee from the native country who then turns over secrets to his handler(the cia officer). That's how it typically works.
paramilitary officers and such are a very different part of the game and aren't technically spies, those they are clandestine operatives.
Officially, the cia is not allowed to do murder for hire, though it may have been done in the past.

Chikiluna - I just have one quick question, other than the way Redford met Pitt in "Spy Game", how do the secret intelligence agencies find people to become clandestine ops or "Spies". And most of all how do they recruit people to kill for them. Do they recruit ex-criminals who have done it before, do they brain wash or do people simply volunteer not knowing they will have to kill?
They brain wash a lot into saying that lives will be saved. The Bourne series is real. To them spying is everything. They lie, cheat, fool, keep the truth away from the lowest rung of agents to keep operating on the field. This way they get to make use of the best and also keep spying at the best levels. They allow brothers to kill themselves, homes to be broken, minds to be broken, they break personal relationships all in the name of gaining Intel. A lot of people get excited on saving lives and the challenging job and join. They don't know what is in store. What Brad Pitt does in this movie and Leo in Body of Lies by walking out on their superiors is all real. The pressure and injustice gets to them one day and they want to explore life away from this double faced / many faced life. It's like the book Eleventh CommandmentPeople at home cannot ask where they go and what they do. Behind is a lot of lying and cheating and different lives they lead, including multiple mistresses and wives. They keep going in return for posts and power and files. Human relationships mean nothing to them. To answer your question, some are just found and followed. Some go in on their own and some keep trying through soldiers. The CIA looks glamorous, but behind that is a dirty power trip. They'll sell their own for files. For that matter any body in the world will sell human relationships and betray for files. Those who want to join the CIA, and get in, be happy you were rejected. Being a spy is not everything. It is NOTHING. Life is everything. Explore life.

Brad Pitt in this movie and Leo in Body of LiesBoth told their superiors to beep off because they use them on the field without telling them the truth and spoil personal relationshipsIn both movies, the agents walking away is a real thing. The superiors deserve it for messing with personal lives. In both respective movies they lost their best on the field. At some point most agents will do it. But it's all justified.
