I watched this three times and I still can't figure this out.
It was revealed that the criminals were set up in the elderly lady's apartment below the Conrad's apartment, but it was ALSO revealed that they were set up IN the Conrad's apartment. At least it looks that way to me. Which is which? Whose apartment did they have their stuff set up in or was it both somehow?
Also, just want to make a comment, that for all the money they must have spent on machine guns, ammo, surveillance cameras, computers, cell phones for both doctors, cars, cell phone plans for them, etc. just to pull this thing off, it probably could have all added up to the $10 million the jewel was worth!!! -

Near the beginning of the film you saw the men break in and "cut" the old lady's lock to get into her apartment this was not because they had a problem with her or she had anything to do with the diamond.
It was simply just so they could set up there "basecamp" if you like underneath it. This would make it easier feeding the camera's/wires and stuff into the above apartment where the psyciatrist and family lived.
SO hope this answers your question they were set up in the ladys apartment that was their "homebase" so to speak. but they had hidden camera's in the families apartment.
