One question, triezes objective is claimed to have been peace all along. why did he kill the alliance leader in episode 7 when he seems to be heading towards peace anyway? did he question how far the alliance would go with peace talks and that something more drastic was neccessary to attain peace or was his objective not peace at that point?

his initial objective was to have "peace" for the earth and the colonies under OZ and then he realized that the Romefeller foundation just wanted controlthat everything would be the sameso when he stepped down as the leader of OZ..then he realized that Queen Relena would not be able to obtain peace through disarmamentthat a battle with White Fang that would erradicate the group/organizations like it and destroy massive amounts of mobile suits at the same time. people would realize how ugly battles are and achieve peace through a desire to have no more war.
i hope that wasn't too confusing.

I'd say they were being too kind on Treize's motives aftetr he died in the last episode of the show and this movie.
I think he assassinated the leaders of the Alliance because he wanted supreme power. He thought people needed to be controlled and disliked this diplomatic process that involved essientially hints of democracy and extensions of peace. He said several times in the show that people "like to be ruled and it is a fact they enjoy it." Something I don't think is very true, but seemed to be his motives. He wanted to hold complete power over the colonies and Earth and then.there would be peace.
Of course peace at sword point is not really peace. But then his ideals of honor and civility were threatened as it became clear Romefellor used him to have oz infiltrate the Alliance but were ignoring him. He was considered too powerful by Dormale who probably made moves to take power away from him and one of those moves was to insist on the use of the mobile dolls. Their methods (threatening to blow up space colonies, albeit Lady Une did that first and he let her off with a slap on the hand) disgusted him. There was no honor there and he had enemies in the highest ranks of Romefellor so he went into a somewhat forced but unexpectedly quick resignation.
He then built a Gundam went off to be a recluse and crazy person as over a third of Oz apparently followed him and fought in his name but he didn't do shyte until the world turned for a new revolution. Zechs gave him that opportunity and he reealized Relena would likely not use force to stop Zechs. So he magivcally infiltrated Romefellor again (how I have no idea) took over but at this point he wasnn't aiming to dictate but stop a threat to his love, earth.
He went into space to give Zechs his huge "historical battle to shame generations about war," but went with the intention to die in battle and give Zechs a victory that would save Earth. It backfired because his death didn't mean crap to Zechs other than "I'm free of Treize" and was of course the Gundams that knocked some sense into Zechs and stopped him.
Just I think Treize's role in the show. Very enigmatic but unlike most of the other main characters such as Zechs, Wufei and arguably all the other Gundam pilots at one point in the show, he was not insane.
