We are getting the old series run in sequence in Australia. The episode Tower of Silence seems to be the first without Mel Silver or Frankie, but there was no story line that saw them go, as far as I can see.

Her death happened,in a moving and scary way,in series 4 episode "SHADOWPLAY".
Frankie disappeared after this episode, said to be going back to research.
I am a big WAKING THE DEAD fan but I can only answer your question because I have been buying the dvds and watching them again.
There were an awful lot of episodes and it is easy to not recall every detail.

I did eventually see the episode where Mel died and it was a good one. The disappearance of of Frankie, not so much.

          Shadowplay spoiler:
Mel died in Part 2 of Shadowplay. She was at the apartment of Matt Carney, who had just been killed by one of his brother's patients, a young woman. She had a police radio with her, but the girl had been manipulated by Carney to be wary of police (easily done for a schizophrenic), so even though Mel was calming her down & gaining her trust and had gotten the gun away from her, a communication came over the radio, and the girl began tensing up again. Mel took a phone call out on the balcony (it was someone from her team, trying to warn her), and the girl, becoming progressively worked up and distrustful of a cop talking to an unseen person of authority, out of earshot after just asking her to trust her, rushed Mel at the balcony. Boyd and Grace had figured out some of the girl's pathology & were speeding over there to give Mel some backup with the unpredictable patient, but they were too latejust as they drove under a part of the block of flats, Mel took a header into Boyd's windshield.
