Although the characters were supposed to be Austrian, as a native English-speaker, I could not help but see them as French because they were speaking French and were portrayed by famous French actors. Did anyone else experience this feeling?

It felt a little weird indeed. Haneke could have easily set this in France without changing the script. Somehow Austria was important to the story or it's an homage to the novel.

I know Vienna has a special relationship with music, so maybe that was part of why he & I guess the author wanted the film version to still be set in Austria. But I wonder if there was something more to thatsomething more Freudian (Vienna again!).
