he is going to kill himself. that speech he gives his sonomg. amazing acting. it really had me tear up it felt so real, like that was really his son. the delivery of the lines and message about growing up, falling in love, spoiling his future wife. just amazing. this movie is pretty underrated.

I agree, that was an amazing scene. Half the time I start tearing up just when he's waking him up. I fell apart the first time I saw the movie and he started his little speech telling him to always listen to his mother. Putting aside the healthcare debate and just looking at this movie as a MOVIE, it's really a great one. Obviously this scene completely took the cake though. It's heartbreaking and amazing all at the same time. I'm assuming it would be even more powerful for people who have kids. Denzel is an amazing actor, always believable in anything he does.

Other than when Denzel "dies" protecting Dakota Fanning on 'Man On Fire' this is the most emotional I've gotten over a film he's in! Amazing Amazing Job Denzel!! chriss5, I tear up everytime I watch John Q.
I think that this movie is underrated because so many people only see the message about health care and not the message about his love for his son and his willingness to go to any means to save his son. DW is such an awesome, versatile actor and one of the best of times right now!! I've never watched a movie that was bad with him in it!! I was 10 when Glory came out and I've been fond of him ever since!!

Denzel really should've gotten a Oscar nomination for his perfomance not just for this film but for Man on Fire. I just can't believe he didn't get ANYTHING for Man on Fire, crazy!

Tell me about it. Denzels performance in Man On Fire is up there with the best in my opinion. Not even a nomination for an Oscar? The Academy is a joke.

I loved Washington's performance in this scene But I bet Washinton himself, like me, has a problem with what the editor did right at the end when he says '..love you' - there's an awkward cut to another angle and the intensity isn't quite up there. Then we get the wide shot, which has a nice, fitting solemnity. I'd say it would have been better to just lose the line if there was a problem with it in the incredible close up take that was used up to that point; and go straight to the wide shot; than to cut in that other shot with the slightly lesser performance. I've done quite a bit of editing. That's my take.
