Did I miss something?

I've been catching up on a bunch of series I've missed over the years.
I finally got to Six Feet Under.
I'm not sure when it exactly happened but somewhere along the lines this became one of the worst shows I've ever seen. There wasn't one person in the entire show that I had any sympathy for or cared about. They were all self absorbed,egotistical, whiny, self indulgent, morally bankrupt people.
Not one of these people had any redeeming qualities that I could relate to. I didn't think talking to dead people or having all their little daydreams were at all "clever".
After I watched it I went to check how this show lasted as long as it did and was utterly shocked at the number of people saying it was "the best show ever".
The writing wasn't horrible and the acting was actually very good for the most part. Other than the dude that played Nate. Not impressed. I'm still not sure on the ending. It may have been a good ending but by the time I got to it I really didn't care. My judgement may be a little clouded.
I usually don't go on about how I don't like things but this one left me stumped.
How could anybody care for these characters?

Yeah, I know I'm in the minority on this one. I love dark humor so I thought I'd
like this show but man, it got to the point where I grew to despise all the characters.

That's a good point. The ending was emotional but it seemed a little forced to me.
Like they needed to figure out a way to kill everybody. Nobody died in their sleep or even in a hospital that I remember.

Ruth died in the hospital and Claire died in her sleep. All the others seemed to just drop dead at a very old age, only Keith had an unnatural death, he was shot during a robbery.
Perhaps you were mixing up their deaths with the random people dying at the begining of each show. -

Yep, you're right. I remember thinking how old everybody looked when Ruth died except for George. He looked the same. Then Keith looked the same at the funeral but a few years later they had him with a gray beard.
I may have mixed things up but more probably I forgot everything as soon as I watched it since I was checked out by the last episode.

One of my favorite TV series. I found David to be one of the most realistic portrayals on TV of a man struggling with his sexuality. Claire was utterly charming and Brenda was a worthy villain. The finale was brilliant.

Funny thing is David would have been the one character that I would have hung out with.
None of these people cared about anybody but themselves. They had no idea of what commitment was.

I had a similar reaction when I watched Transparent which I think is more overt in showing the self absorption of the characters. They are all selfish, flawed and sometimes flat out unlikeable during the first few episodes. It is similar to Six Feet Under in its dark tone set in very contemporary LA suburb. But Transparent, also like Six Feet Under, is extremely well written and tells a story that is rarely seen on TV, particularly pre Caitlyn Jenner. If you watch and stick it through, season 2 is brilliant.

would definitely like to hear some of your favorite shows because IMO this is the most touching and comforting show I've ever watched. I think the whole theme of the show is that everyone is a giant piece of **** at times but we are all dynamic. It seemed to me that the writer lived a thousand lives or something because the show touched on pretty much every experience/idea in life with an indifference that shows that no matter how smart you are or what you have experienced, we are all giant retards that aren't "too good" for anything.
