    I've never seen the previous versions of this film or, if I have I don't remember them, and I had never heard of this version until I stumbled across it on cable yesterday while home with the flu.
    I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I've always been a big fan of historical epics, they just don't make them that often any more, and I thought this one was very well done.
    I think there may be several reasons why it did so poorly at the box office though;
    Whatever you're feelings about empire building and messing about in other countries affairs this movie was not the place to tackle that debate. It was supposed to be about love and friendship and honor and duty. The director twisted the story, and historical fact as well, to fit his own agenda. I think that aspect of the film, as a previous poster has already stated, really hurt it at the box office.
    Also, Kate Hudson was grieviously mis-cast, I'm not saying she's a bad actress, she just didn't fit at all in the role.
    Overall though, this movie is a jem, I was really surprised that I'd never heard of it before yesterday and I'm glad I finally got to see it. When Heath Ledger passed away the world lost a truly fine actor.
