Am I supposed to feel sorry for the British army?

From what I learn out of the movie; a foreign country are trying to set up their own government and rules in a country that is not yet been developed. They come in and bring their armies the fight the residence of those who oppose their rules to secure their order of authority. I just feel like the Natives are the victims and the British army is another foreign country who has to conquer land from other people and claim it as their own.

I know how I feel and thank you very much. I just wanted to know if that's how the movie wanted the viewer to feel. Friends joining up for the military to perform their duties as gentlemen under the Great British Empire and some ended up dying from people that they consider savages who were uncivilized.
