I was under the impression that he abused the mother and the mother took it and one day J Lo's character called the police. I never got the impression that he abused J Lo's character at all unless I missed something.

"and one day J Lo's character called the police"
Thanks for setting me straight I don't know why throughout the film I assumed she was the one who arrested him.
Maybe your version would explain why she became a cop.

J.Lo's character did in fact arrest her father when he was abusing her mother. She had already become a police officer at that point.

I thought she (Sharon Pogue/Jennifer Lopez) just called the police. This is what her mother says to her in the argument they have when Sharon first visits her mother in the movie.
And no, the father didn't abuse Sharon physically.

                Yes.
Her father never beat her or hit her or hurt her physically.
However, physically abusing a child's mother (and sibling) in their presence (and some might even argue even if they are not present) is abuse. (Emotional and psychological)
that's why sharon said, "he never hurt me not once" and Catch said, "yes he did"

                    Bump..? I don't get it.
They never get into what she did exactly, but the way they talked about it makes it seem like she did arrest him herself; although that would make Sharon no less than 28-years-old, since they said it was over 10 years ago, and JLo doesn't quite look it. Oh well.
I don't personally relate to her father being this repulsive to her. Whatever she did, it doesn't make sense that he personally hold it against her on the day he chooses to renew his vowels with his wife, therefore - insinuate that he'd never hurt her again. I think the writer wanted more drama than the main conflict, but it doesn't seem right. It'd make more sense if Sharon didn't want to see her dad again, like vice versa.

A bump is when someone wants to move the thread to the top of the list on the message board.

I always got the impression that Sharon called the police on him when she was a child, because he hit her mother. Neither of Sharon's parents ever fully forgave her for that.

                          It's not that complecated!
She called the police, and he got arrested.
He abused her by abusing her mother.
He's mad at her because he was humiliated.

And Sharon's mother was obviously a devout Christian who didn't believe in divorce. It was never said out loud, really, but it was obvious she felt that way. Sharon felt that her mom should have left her dad when he abused her, but she didn't believe in that. She never had the courage to stand up for herself, so instead, she just tiptoed around her husband as if everything was okay. Sharon didn't understand that kind of thinking, and it affected their relationship.

I believe that Sharon was the only sane person in that family. It was so awful in the end when she was crying and her father just turned his back on her. I hated her family immensely, she doesn't need those bunch of freaks and doormats.
