Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Meet the Parents

    Viltrumite — 12 years ago(July 13, 2013 09:10 AM)

I changed my name and I wiped away the crappy old one as thoroughly as possible. My passport, my payslips, my driving license, my tax form, etc. I realise that the revelation that Greg's idiot parents called him "Gaylord" is supposed to be humourous, but the way it happened was slightly weird. Unless, of course, he was in the process of getting his stuff updated, in which case one has to wonder why he didn't do it years ago. In the sequel, his ID badge at work even said "Gaylord". He hadn't fixed it by then?

He's an idiot. Anyone with any sense would have dealt with it the second they hit 18.

Gaylord is not the worst name ever.

If there's a worse name, I can't think of it at the moment.

                      1. maybe it's the name that you were born with that made you switch.
                      2. terrible names are subjective. I think "Apple" is a terrible name for a child, unless it's a nickname. "Oranjelo" is a bad one, too.
                      3. But, personally, I like the name Gaylord (even if I'd never heard it before this movie and even though I'd never name my child Gaylord)

                        I wouldn't name my
                        dog
Gaylord, let alone my child. Before I'd seen this movie, Gaylord was just a playground insult, I had no idea that people actually named their kids Gaylord.

Well, not everyone is terrified of being called Gaylord that they'd go through the hassle of legally changing their name.
So many stories, so little time.

At the airport you need to show your ID. IDs have people's legal names, not nicknames. So even if you go by Liz, Jen, or Katie, your license will still indicate Elizabeth, Jennifer, or Katherine.
Thus, Greg's ID has Gaylord and to make things easier, his luggage tag just has his legal name. It would look suspicious if his ID showed Gaylord and his luggage tag showed Greg.
Also, yeah it's a silly name, but when you write your info on the luggage tag, it's kind of assumed that no one will actually see it.

Gaylord never had the bad connotation as it does today. With the amount of innuendos found today, in phrases that were never originally thought to be anything more than what they stated; the present generations put a stigma on it. Gaylord seems like a very high class name.
Fun Fact: Gaylord had to actually be the last name of someone because there was an entire restaurant franchise named after it as well as college football bowls.
Reminder: The O.C. resets to its first episode on POP network April 1 @ 2 p.m. EST
