Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ginger Snaps

    averageshep — 11 years ago(September 23, 2014 02:01 PM)

Hey folks, a long time lurker around these parts and a huge Ginger Snaps fan. Finally thought I'd join here and get discussing (If you guys know any other GS-related forums, my PMs are all ears!
). I look forward to posting here and you all seem nice! Anyhow, friendly greeting aside, I've got a little question I was thinking about recently:
    Well, I was watching
    Unleashed
again the other day (Little combo with the original's new Blu-Ray!) and I was thinking about how the series could continue? Where could it head, both in terms of plot and in terms of it's media format.
My main thought was another movie, which could perhaps focus on Ghost. Maybe it could show us what happened after the second movie. A direct continuation if you will, taking into account the times between the production of the films of course. Failing that though, there are a lot of ways that the story continue without another film, as, for example, there have been a few franchise continuations that involved TV series and comics/graphic novels. But would these fit Ginger Snaps?
Then again, you could argue that should the series continue at all? Have we reached a fitting end of sorts? Is there no need or purpose to add to the story? And of course, is it even likely that we could see any sort of new material in the foreseeable future?
I'm eager to read your views!

I personally feel that they've done all they can with the series. I mean if they were to continue it they'd probably make it a crossover with Orphan Black or send them into space. It makes great fan fiction but it makes a horrible movie.

I'd be the first to admit (having written a whole GS fanfic novel, if you don't know) that the second half of
        Unleashed
leaves me with an empty feeling, and
        Back to the Beginning
never filled in the first place. I think they made Unleashed with the deliberate intention of closing out the series so there couldn't be another sequel. But . . . we can outsmart them.
I believe they made two more movies because by that time they realized that GS was a cult favorite. They also realized it would have far more reach with the new Internet/fan/niche audience as a trilogy. Fantasy and horror fans tend to want at least a trilogy on something.
However, they wanted to end the series as well. The main talents, like Karen Walton and John Fawcett wanted to do other things. More importantly, their two female leads were three and eight years older than their roles to begin with. Though Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins have stayed young for an extraordinary length of time, the makers of GS couldn't know that at the time.
As for it continuing now, the problem is, I don't want to picture anyone else in those roles. I think a lot of fans are like that, too. So, if it happens, it would have to be either in literature or comics.
        And I've done what I could. I've written a
        GS
fan fiction novel, one that takes the first five minutes of
        Unleashed
and then runs in a different direction:
        http://ivory-bunker.blogspot.com/2014/10/ginger-snaps-fan-fiction-nove l-sample.html#more
(I may repost a newer version of that chapter in a few days, so you might want to wait.)

I believe there was supposed to be a spin off series based on Ghost but obviously it never materialized.

I liked Ghost, not the most subtle character, but there's a lot to do with her. I don't think a sequel or a follow up of any kind should be based on a story but on a theme. The first movie used the werewolves as a metaphore for puberty, the second one for drug addiction (and the third one was just a way to bring Ginger back and say beep a lot in colonial america). The sequel should find a new theme. I'm not against a come back of Brigitte as an adult, and they could explore themes like sexism or maternity. This could be very cool.

Jason wasn't cured from becoming a werewolf. It only slowed down his process. It's now 15 years later and once again animals are being attacked. This time the main leads are the polar opposite and they run into Jason's wolf. Their journey takes them on trying to find Jason because they believe killing the werewolf that turned them could cure them.

This makes the most sense. Jason was left alive in the original GS, so it would essentially be back to the beginning again, and he is the wolf who bites them. So you'd have another set of sisters perhaps as is tradition in the series. I think that kind of works because it's a bit like the old story of Little Red Riding hood.

if a 4th movie is made, i would love to see bridgett maul ghost for what she did, and have ghost be scared to death, and not happy about possibly turning into a werewolf herself..little paranoid idiot.

I honestly say that, if anything, the series has gone to everywhere it can go. Maybe, just maybe it could make another sequel where Brigitte attacks Ghost but where exactly CAN the story go from there? Brigitte continues to find a more permanent form of Monkshood to cure her werewolf-ism? She accidentally finds out its a genetic experiment from the company Orphan Black is fighting? She runs into the werewolves from Underworld? She finds out that its an extreme form of Fae from Lost Girl? All of these would be okay fan fictions when put in the right hands (wellI can see the Lost Girl one having Bo beep Brigitte - yes its THAT kind of a show) but not movies.
