Isn't it about bloody time the BBC ended its mutually-held love affair with Jonathan Ross and actually recruited someone who was not only deeply in the know about film and the processes involved in making them, but also possesses a genuine passion for the craft?
Jonathan Ross, as is amply demonstrated in his Friday night ego trip, considers himself to be the most important aspect of any project he's involved in. Quite apart from his penchant for sexually harassing all his female guests, behaviour that in any other field would trigger an industrial tribunal, he's simply not insightful enough to illuminate a film's full meaning in-context. By contrast, Mark Kermode has a vast reservoir of knowledge and the intelligence and humour to make the experience truly enjoyable.

Yes, I agree entirely. Ross is a self aggrandising, seedy little lecher who one minute is bullying and cajoling the guests that he doesn't particularly take a shine to, the next, sickeningly ingratiating himself with the guests he SO admires ie. envies for their power and status.
It wasn't always like this. His chat show back in the 80's was pretty good, but then his rampant ego hadn't been quite so heavily nurtured by Mammon back then.
I find him obsequious, sycophantic and vulgar. He is patently a self promoter who has no great knowledge or love of anything other than himself. Get rid of this fool now. Barry Norman was a genius critic, this guy is a succubus.
Kermode would make a genuinely fantastic replacement for the wretched Ross. He has a passion for the medium that Ross couldn't begin to relate to. He is someone that Ross would find anathema (and as a result, presumably ridicule like the huckstering philistine that he truly is). He is a true connossieur.
When will Network chiefs realise that average TV watchers couldn't care less about 'profile'? EVERYBODY responds to intelligence, wit and passion. Mark Kermode has all 3 traits. For the love of God, fire Ross out of a cannon somewhere rocky and get Kermode in the seat.

I agree 100% with everything that has been said in the above two posts. Sack Ross, get Kermode in.

Come on Mark make the jump onto BBC 1. The Film programme needs you. It also needs to start covering Cannes and covering the summer blockbusters again, and the top ten of the year as recommended by the film critic not by the viewers.

            1. Ross should not be sacked, his profesionalism on the Film programme has never been called into question
            2. Although I am a fan of Kermode and his rants, the show is light hearted yet intelligent, and with Kermode at the helm, the show would take a turn in tone, probably not for the better

I cant bear Kermode. He's so arrogant and snobby, I rarely agree with his reviews

Mark Kermode is a fantastic film critic, I like Jonathan Ross but he doesn't come across as a professional journalist on 'The Film Programme', he will give his opinion on the film and then not elaborate on that opinion, I know it's perfectly acceptable for the general public, but for people who have a great interest in and passion for film it just isn't enough.
Mark Kermode's reviews to me are essential listening and I'm a person who doesn't hold critics in high regard, I find it to be a pointless profession, however, Kermode's reviews are intelligent, witty, passionate and informative. I also don't agree with alot of his opinions, however, it doesn't matter to me because he offers such in-depth reasons and gives such a great argument as to why he doesn't like a film or does like a film, it's refreshing to hear someone speak about something that they are genuinely passionate about.
I would really like to see Mark Kermode take over on 'The Film Programme', sadly I've heard that he's been dropped from 'The Culture Show' and it would be such a shame to lose him from our TV screens. So those are my reasons for wanting to see Kermode in the presenter's seat next year, or even better, get him his own show on SkyArts, now THAT would be great.
