    When Maximus is admiring the small bird before it flies away, then he remembers that war is afoot. That's when we get a great look at Maximus the ordinary man, as opposed to the the soldier and general.

      He's probably thinking how close freedom is, how close death ishow soon he can fly away from all this to see his wife n kid. Alot of symbolism in that shot. forgot about that onegood call

        A soldier preparing for war who takes time to admire the beauty of nature. I like that scene too because it shows us his humanity: that he may be a great warrior who has killed many men but he is also not barbaric or unfeeling.
