housewives like Carolyn Burnham and Barbara Fitts

The two housewives, both about 40-ish, are portrayed as not entirely well-adjusted. Well in fact they are portrayed as pretty close to bat-chit crazy. Unfortunately it isn't very difficult to find real housewives with those same characteristics.
Just last week outside Houston a pretty, 42-yr old Baptist ultra-conservative Christian gun owner originally from Alabama got mad at her husband who was asking for a divorce, so
to punish him
decided to shoot and kill their two daughters, ages 17 and 22. Tragic! But these things really are going on, all the time, we just don't always hear about them.
It is easy to view the characters in "American Beauty" and think that they are caricatures but in truth they are not. Some of us wonder what Carolyn (fictionally) intended to do with the gun she held when Lester was shot. In a real situation like the one depicted in this movie she might well have shot him. If Fitts had not got to it first.
