Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Hellboy

I stated this in the Hellboy 2 boards so I thought I'd do a similar thing over here. Anyone else think DHP was the perfect choice as the voice of Abe? I like the sequel but I HATE Doug Jones's voice in comparison to DHP. I don't care if Del Toro was forced to redub Jones's lines in this film, it was the right move. A good idea is a good idea I don't care who it comes from. Not having DHP for the sequel made it seem like sour grapes on Del Toro's part. Because a studio exec made him do something he didnt want to carry it over to the sequel. Myers is gone and DHP is gone. Myers I could care less about but Abe was an audience favourite when I saw this in theatres. The chemistry between Abe and Hellboy just doesn't seem the same with DJ's voice in number 2. I wonder if i would feel different had DJ's voice never been redubed in the first place. Anyone wish DHP back if a third film ever happens?

I can honestly say I barely notice the difference in Abe's voice when watching the two films back to back. Even Pierce himself reportedly asked why he was needed when he heard Jones' original reading of the lines (though he presumably wasn't going to turn down a gig).

I detect very little difference in the two voices - even less with the voice Doug use as the Silver Surfer vs. what was use in the film - in both cases the studio felt a "name" was needed when the original was just fine.
Now in the case of Vader in Star Wars - that's a different story!

I heard about the redub a long time ago, watched the films back to back and never noticed a difference.

David Hyde Pierce's tones and dialects sound very similar to Doug Jones to me - I can understand why David Hyde Pierce was asking why the hell he was there since he was presumably just copying what Doug Jones already did and with similar results.
Granted, I do like David Hyde Pierce's voice and I do think his voice is effective..but the role is much more personal to Doug Jones and I was pleased that they used his voice for the second film. I think Doug Jones has more enthusiasm in his performance as a result, no doubt.

I immediately noticed the difference in Hellboy 2. For once, I think the studio was right on that one. Doug Jones voice sounds flatter than David Hyde Pierce voice. Doug Jones did an amazing job with the character, his movements were on point. His voice just isn't as lively as DHP though. His voice plus Doug Jones acting were better to me. In the second one it felt like something was missing.
