Capt Miller's conflicting remarks

So when Miller gives a reason for taking the hill that eventually gets the Doc killed, he reponds to one of his guys who says something like 'this is not our mission', with something like 'our mission is to win the war'
Then after when one of the guys wants to walk away after Miller let's the German go, he gives a speech about Ryan and how if finding him gets him a ticket home to his wife, that is his mission. And he says to the guy if he wants to go off and fight the war go ahead but every guy he kills makes him feel further from home, etc.
So first he says winning the war is the mission, then after he gives the guy the business if he wants to go off and fight the war.
