It wasn't too much at all! The guy was a bully and a coward who only picked on and assaulted weak, spineless inmates like Del, but backed down in the corner from anybody that actually would fight back and rip him apart easily i.e. Wild Bill, Brutal, Paul, Arlen Bitterbuck, etc. Guy got exactly what was coming.

The Bitterbuck character is pretty interesting. He's not in too much of the movie, and in the film the kind of relationship he has with Percy is never addressed at all. But if I recall correctly, in the book Arlen was a lot more of a badass than he was in the movie, and he could've kicked Percy's ass into next month and back if Percy messed with him. And since he was a prisoner instead of a guard, and was going to die soon no matter what happened, Percy couldn't have weaseled out of it by threatening him with his family connections! That must be why he never dreamed of getting on the wrong side of ol' Bitterbuck.
