Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Virus

The small machines look like the Replicators from Stargate: sort of like mechanical spiders. The similarity to the Borg is more obvious.
In both cases, the Borg and Replicators want to 'assimilate' or consume whatever technology humans have. In this movie, the 'things' want to eradicate the humans they think are a virus, and use us as spare parts. Not too dissimilar.

LOL, I saw the Borg connection before, but I didn't see the Replicator connection before.

They even used almost the same ocular implants as the Borg, I just kept waiting to see will there be some tubes sticking out of their heads

Yep, definitely some heavy "borrowing" from the Star Trek universe going on here. Where's Locutus when you need him?

It reminds me more of 1989's

Well, the movie is actually based on a comic book that was first published in 1992, before "Stargate" came out, and was even written first as a screenplay earlier, in 1990 or 1991.
The Borg had already been introduced on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," true, but I'm sure they weren't the first bad guys in media who wanted to assimilate something.
