This scene was horrible..not because of the scar itself or the problem some people seem to have dealing with 'awkward' moments between people of certain ages. But earlier in the film after Devon tells her parents Bret has molested her, she leaves the room, her mom makes some idle comment about how she changed her doctors appointment and then dad makes some quip about(forgive me if I slightly misquote) "when she starts dating in a few years and a guy tries that..he'll never come back" or something about it "better be in the dark"
When you see the scar as she tells Trent her dad cannot bear to even look at it you remember that throwaway remark and..well I was sickened..I wanted to kill the fooker.
Anyone else hear this and maybe get direct quote..I'm sure I may be slightly off.
Top movie though. Rockwell is sooo good I would take a diversion to his trailer myself 😄
    Gotta return some videotapes

Yes, the difference between Devon telling her parents that Bret had touched her and later when Trent did is HUGE. Her parents are both horrible, especially her father. It isn't even just her scar- if you listen out he often says things about her looks and about how she has to look happy and pretty, and at one point comments to his wife that one of the girls from Devon's school has a face like a possum and they both laugh about it and say 'I feel sorry for her parents'. They are extremely preoccupied with image and want Devon to be a nice little girl, and can't recognise that Bret is the real monster, not Trent.

They're typical upper-class conservatives, obsessed with keeping up appearances. How things
        are
isn't important. All that matters is how things
        look
        .

And of course Brett was fooling around with the mother of Devon so naturally she didn't want any conflict their because it could ruin her marriage so she kind of brushed it off too.
Also more proof that the parents are horrible is when the mom drops Devon off at a "friends" house which she completely made up, and the reason they did drop her off because her "friends" father was some kind of big shot, and Devon's father/mother both saw it as helping their personal gain.

there were many examples of their horrible parenting but for me the first big hit came from her father saying she should pretend to be happy. no wondering about what they could do to make her happy or worrying about the fact that she isn't happy

"I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me"
