I think you need to know something. This movie takes place in the 1950s and everything said by Dudley Smith to Exley at the beginning of the film was considered okay. As a cop you actually could beat info out of a suspect if you thought he was guilty. You could shoot a criminal in the back to insure he doesn't get off from a crime you knew he committed. You could plant evidence on a suspect you knew to be guilty. It wasn't until 1968 that the rights we have now to an attorney and not talking to the cops about anything came about.
