Agreed. SLJ deserved one too IMO, as he did with Django.

Hell, she deserved to win. The competition was weak that year. "Afterglow" wouldn't have been nominated it it wasn't Julie Christie in that part, Helen Hunt was arguably the "weakest" of the nominees and shouldn't have won, Kate Winslet wasn't winning for what some considered Cameron's weakest protagonist and Helena Bonham Carter was probably considered to be too "subdued." The only one who I think could have won over Helen Hunt was Judi Dench, but that's a moot point now. If "Jackie Brown" was done today and not immediately after "Pulp Fiction", I'm sure Harvey Weinstein would've pushed it for Oscars like there's no tomorrow and probably gotten it a boatload of nominations.

I actually don't hate Hunt's win, at least compared to the other nominees. I do borderline hate As Good As It Gets, which is a mawkish, condescending, witless, spineless, phony mess. But Hunt brought some honesty to a role that could of easily been an "everyday working woman who just needs a good man" trope. I was happy to see her nominated for The Sessions, proving she's wasn't just a one-timer. Although, to me that was more of a lead role. However, I would have preferred Dench to win out of the '97 nominees. Dench is an amazing actor who has gotten nominations for some booty roles but she didn't win for her two best nominated performances (Notes on A Scandal and Mrs Brown). I don't resent Hunt's win though. There have been quite a few weaker winners in that category after she won (Paltrow, Kidman, Witherspoon, Bullock, Streep).
I do agree that Grier should have been nominated and won that year. I also agree that she likely would have been nominated today with Weinstein's backing and Tarantino having greater favor within the academy. At least it's remembered as a great performance, which to me is more important than winning an award.

Yes her role lives on with or without award ceremonies attached. She at least got nominated at the Golden Globes and SAGS which usually give promise to actors of getting set for the Oscars so it's shocking she didn't get the Oscar nod and that there were no outraged responses like those ludicrous ones the Oscars are getting lately. Her performance is more memorable and lives on stronger in legacy than the rest of those nominees because she made that movie and it owed a great deal to her. I'd also like to throw Joan Allen's performance in The Ice Storm too as one that should have been nominated that year, but I guess that film was heavily overlooked for its weak marketing and limited releases to be as heavily noticed as indie art house films would today.

Pam Grier was utterly flawless in this movie. This was the most fully formed and realized character ever in a QT movie..and much of the reason was her very skilled portrayal of the role. She should have won an Oscar that year.
