The poster who said his brain won out is right.
Jackie had a fleeting interest in him, not a real one. He was a means to an end and he realized it.
He was sad at the end because:- He knew he couldn't trust her.
- He was tired in general of life and having been involved in what happened.
most importantly - He was also relieved it was over and she was gone.
Some women flirt with you making you think you're who they're into. If you see them interact with other guys when they don't know you're there you'll see them doing the same thing.
Jackie was that type of woman but worse 'cause she was capable of stealing and killing if the need arose.

yep you hit the nail on the head. also the fact that she wanted to go to paris and spend that money up right away. he knew she was reckless.
she was driving around in a dead mans car and max was shocked by that. he didnt think it was right.
she wanted to spend all the newly gotten money to tour spain. I think that would require her to leave her job so now she is only living off of the 450 thousand. -

"Jackie driving off in a stolen car ".
Thank you !! Took 2 pages of reading to see this mentioned. And not just that it was stolen but
it belonged to a guy who Max had just witnessed gettin' blown away. I think most would find that a bit creepy and then some.
Someone here asked why, since he mentioned that he was tired/bored of his business and wanted 'out', he didn't dump the business and go with her ?
I read a few responses to this question but no one mentioned that after all he had been through since meeting Jackie, 'boring' didn't seem so bad afterall - a 'Be careful what ya wish for' kinda thing.
I mean how many middle aged men, trapped in a job they've been doing day in day out for decades, doesn't occasionally fantasize about a big pay day, one that might be enough for some hot lookin' babe to forget his age - enough where he wouldn't have to introduce himself as 'Max, the bail bondsman " (or Joe the mailman etc., etc). and taking off on romantic 'tropical island getaways' etc. with said 'hot babe(s)' ?
In steps Jackie Brown and some decent $$. Not enough $$ to comfortably live out the rest of his life on (presumably he will live into his 70s at least) but enough for a whirlwind fling or two.
Ok Spain, not the tropical islands but close enough.
At a young age I developed a theory that I've tried to keep in mind when in similar (albeit not quite as exciting) situations as Max found himself in:
"The fantasy is better than the reality ..".
Trial and error brought me to this realization
and I think 'Max' (or Quentin) figured out same.
As much as a scumbag Jacksons character was, still, think about it, would you ride off in this car with Jackie and all his money and feel comfortable that all is goin' to go ok with this woman ? Especially once the $$ starts gettin' low ?
Besides, its easier to get a good nights sleep with BOTH eyes shut ! Whatever Maxs fantasies had been prior to meeting Jackie, none of them came this close to actually being realized. But Max was mature enough to know better and besides, he now has lots more material to work with when conjuring up his fantasy/fantasies while zoning out during matinees over at the local mall.
Just sayin' . -

This is an excellent thread. I congratulate the posters for their well-thought-out observations.
I found it very interesting that no one raised the issue of race, the fact that Max is white and Jackie is black. Someone could certainly have written, "Well, Max didn't follow Jackie to Spain because he doesn't trust blacks and wouldn't enter into a longtime relationship with a black woman, even if he likes her."
But nobody wrote anything like that. All the entries dealt with the man/woman relationship, not the black/white relationship. And that's healthy, I think. That's what makes this movie so enjoyable; above all, it's about human beings. -

I noticed that car following Jackie at the end and wondered. But didn't Max also say that he was 'selling' the business? That would take some time and then he jumps on a plane to Spain. Maybe.

It's obvious what happens at the end: Brown drives away, Max realises he didn't wash his hands ( as Ordell points out earlier ), and returns to the washroom to do so. Hygiene is very important after all.

Max liked to pack fudge, thats why he didnt go.
I also suspect that he was racist, and didnt fancy Spain.
In the end he stayed, adopted a child, who grew up and shot him, and then joined the Texas Rangers. -

Maybe I missed an important part of the movie, but then I have yet to see the rest of this board; I think years ago, I posted on here about the then Robinsons-May and how many cameras Loss Prevention had up.
I never got how someone as ambitious as Ray would not "check the tapes."
I may post this again somewhere else if I get the answer I'm looking for.
The only thing I can think of is that they are supremely lucky/take the chance of lucknotice how he stays to one part of the ladies department? Keeps his head down?
Did they count on LE not watching the video after Jackie and Melanie are gone?
Cause that could have blown everything.
That was right before a lot of businesses went high techthey were just watching for someone to go into a dressing room and come out wearing more layerson the spot Loss Prevention Stuff. So the cameras were for immediate reaction or some evidence, but not the zoom in and out we have now.
My point is that if Max loves Jackie, he HAS to stay put.
He knows sooner or later, his spending habits, his habits in general, may come into play.
It's a small point. O's Mexican Connection won't want an investigation, right?
But the cops might wonder why Jackie went and how she's making it
I think she's smart enough that she'll still be working a small Spanish airline for a while, since she obviously speaks the languageshe just has security to build up on for the first time.
If Max stays put. Which he realizes, and she does too, but she pays him the compliment of asking him to come. -

The movie is open ended. The last we see is Max in a quandry, not smiling that he made the right decision. Maybe Jackie sends him a postcard, maybe he joins her it's all possible, make your own mind up what happened in the next month or so.
I reckon that's not the last time jackie Brown and Max Cherry see each other, but that reckoning belongs to me.
