I realize that it isn't the kind of movie to have a happy ending like that, but was there any specific reason that Max didn't leave with Jackie at the end? Was he convinced it wouldn't work out and didn't want to ruin the brief time they had together? Or did he think he was too old to make something like that work?

I think he also thought it was too soon to take their relationship to a new level by taking a trip far overseas and swiftly getting out of his comfort zone in that moment. I think if he spends enough time with himself he'll make plans to go out and find her or thinks she'll be back and the more they spend together, he'll be more prepared to take a trip with her. I've never gone on a trip with anybody I've only known for a week and prefer to give it a month or so before I'm up for a bigger adventure elsewhere.

I think it's because he realizes that he was part of her whole elaborate con. She knew he wouldn't come with her. He needed a moment to get over the fact that he was played too, even though he thought he was helping her do the playing.

How did she play him? Only thing bogus she did to him was take his gun without permission.

She played him by taking advantage of his feelings that he had for her and using those feelings to get him to help her plan the whole thing, considering all parties involved, and even help with the money grab personally. She knew he wouldn't come with her. He had too much feelings for her. He was so weak around her that he allowed himself to be an accomplice.

I like to think they meant up again down the road.Really think he was scared of Jackie, being so vulnerable to her. She brought all this danger and excitement to his tired mundane life whats the next step? go sit on a beach reading a book? He was scared of her becoming boring and "normal"

Jackie is from a different world and he knows she rather ruthlessly robbed Ordell and then set him up to get shot. Max says he is scared of her and in a sense it is true. Max is a relatively straight arrow bail bondsman while there is a touch of the Black Widow about Jackie.
