I agree. It's one of her most underrated performances. She was magnificent in the role, and gave a pathos to the wicked stepmother that is notably absent from the original Disney movie.
I think the sub plot of losing her baby lends her a sympathetic vibe early in the movie. But I also sympathize with her when her attempts to connect with Lily are rebuffed, both when Lily is a child and a teenager.

This was an auspicious start for the director, it's so sad he never got to helm other films.
