This is far and away the best flick of '97

Wow! There must have been no other films in 1997. I just watched this in a hotel room and it is atrocious. I noticed the film was produced by Segal and that just goes to show that he basically made it up as he went along.
He threatened to send 300 agents halfway thru. So why didn't the feds send, not 300, but half a dozen? The whole preposterous plot was built on the story that "one man takes on the evil empire and wins".
And did you also notice that the bad barrels were 400m into the mine? How many entrances does a mine have? Let's assume that it has "lots", and that "lots" is 50. How long would it take a bunch of EPA guys to go 400m into each of 50 entrances? A few days at most
Plus, all that rubbish about trying to frame him, run him off the road with a Mack truck, etc, when your normal gangster would just shoot him while he's asleep and then throw the body into a ravine.
And, finally, award for "crappest special effect of 1997" goes to the wierd green effects in the final scenes when the toxic waste is spurting everywhere.
Best flick of '97? It's not even the best flick of "Steven Segal's list of films wot he made in '97 about toxic waste"! -

This movie was kind of lame, even for Seagals standards, but anyone who thinks that this is one of Seagals worst movies obviously hasnt seen some of his recent movies especially Out For A Kill and Out Of Reach-those movies were truly godawful. But it is still definitely better than that other activist movie or whatever its called (you guys know what I'm saying) that I've seen called On Deadly Ground. At least, since the new century hit, Seagal hasn't done any activist movies. But the movies hes done after Exit Wounds haven't been much better. Anyway, Fire Down Below would probably have to be in the middle of all the movies hes done, not nearly as good as Out For Justice, Under Siege, or any of Seagals first five movies, but not nearly as bad as those recent movies Ive seen I mentioned above. I hear Mercenary For Justice which is supposed to come out next week on DVD is supposed to be Seagals best movie since Exit Wounds so hopefully we can finally see a decent new Seagal movie for a change.

I wrote my college thesis paper comparing Fire Down Below to Citizen Kane. My conclusion was that while Citizen Kane may be construed as ground breaking for it's time, Fire Down Below breaks all conventional movie making rules and dares to attempt in showing the protoganist as multidimensional, raging a battle within himself over the death of his friend. Most films would have wasted time emphasising the relationship between Steven Seaguls character and his friend that is killed in the begining of the film. The director of Fire down below realised that the movie shouldnt waste time on the relationship, but rather portray the relationship in a quick montage thus brining the viewer faster to the action.
I was eventually kicked out of college for selling my text books for blow. -

While I do agree with you this film is infinitely better than "Titanic" which still doesn't say much the best film of 1997 is definitely "Adventures of the Fart Bitches":
