    Seems like a really low money and lame way for a mobster to try and make some money plus with the hard work of trying to open it smashing it with a hammer.

          It is lame.
          You could say that it gives Sonny Black's frustrated statement more weight about knowing he's been sent straight to hell if he's around the same low rent mobsters, talking about the same old scams, etc. Essentially lessening the more glamorous portrayal that was seen earlier in the film a little bit.
