Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Boogie Nights

Anytime I watch this film, I'm immediately brought back to my Uncles Annual July 4th BBQ, during the summer of 1998. I was always a bit of a loner, even though I had 3 Older Bros. I was just a bit younger than everyone so I went to my favorite area The Family Room. My Uncle was well off(In comparison to my family), his wife worked for Panasonic, therefore they had state of the art TVs, a Great Sound System etc It was just where I always found myself. The BBQ was just background noise because I was glued to the screen Boogie Nights had taken over my life.
I was brought up with Cinema. Kubrick, Scorsese, Spielberg and FFC. I was very fortunate. My folks never cared. They encouraged me And I was blown away by this guy whom I had no clue as to whom PTA was. 2hrs and 35min I'm in awe. Each and every time I watch this, it's like I'm 14 all over again. It's just one of those films ingrained into my memory. I'll never forget it.
I know we all have these stories, each important to our development to the love of Cinema. And I have my Uncle to thank. Cool enough to let his 14yr Old Nephew dominate the Family Room and watch THIS. Lol. The greatest BBQ of my life. Paul Thomas Anderson has since become my favorite filmmaker 1998 July 4th My life changed forever

That's a great story! It must have been fantastic having such a cool uncle! Only just watched this for the first time today, I think this would have blown my mind as a 14 year old!

I was 14 when I first saw this movie too (the edited for TV version on FX) and it remains my favorite movie to this day. I have gathered I've probably seen it thousands of times at this point and it still never gets old to me.

We didn't let our daughters watch it at that age, but showing the movie to my stepdaughter the summer after she turned 18 is one of my favorite memories of her visits (we're still close, but she's an adult now and doesn't visit every summer, sadly).
It's just a beautiful movie. One of my all-time favorites.
